Specializing in the flora and fauna of the southern Appalachian mountains. |
![]() If you're browsing through this site you might well wonder who Scott Dean is - so here is a little bit about me. I was born and raised in the mountains of southern Appalachia, specifically the coal fields of West Virginia and southwestern Virginia. I spent 21 years in the United States Air Force, retiring in 1991. The Asheville area has been my home since 1992. I attended UNC-Asheville, earning a degree in biology in 1997. I knew I wanted to be a naturalist (the job description is still evolving!) and, thanks to an amazing group of faculty in the Biology department, was basically able to major in the natural history of this area (though I still had to suffer through Organic Chemistry). My studies focused on the flora, fauna, and natural history of the southern Appalachians. For the last eleven years I've been a walk leader for UNC-Asheville's annual Wildflower Pilgrimage. I've also led wildlife and wildflower walks at the Western North Carolina Nature Center, where I worked for a year building the cougar and bobcat habitats. I served as First Vice President of the Friends of the Nature Center and have served on the Town of Weaverville Tree Board. I'm a frequent guest host on Saturdays morning radio's "Nature News" which can be heard on Asheville's WISE 1310 AM and Hendersonville's WTZQ 1600 AM. I've also led programs for the Grove Park Inn's Sunset Mountain Spring program, various Bed and Breakfasts, and presented slide programs for civic and social groups in the area. |
