American Hazelnut - Corylus
americana
This member of the Birch family is not extremely common in this
area. The leaves are quite distinctive (once you've seen a few
of them!) and the fruit which is just forming in this photo features
a husk which is only just larger than the nut itself. A cousin,
the Beaked Hazelnut has
a much more pronounced husk surrounding the fruit.
