Blue-stemmed Goldenrod
- Solidago caesia
This fall blooming member of the Aster family features lance
shaped, sharply toothed leaves with flowers in the axils. One
of 90 species of Solidago found in North America these plants
are unusual in that the uppermost flowers open first, and the
remaining flowers bloom in descending order. We think this is
because when they first bloom there are quite a few other flowers
competing for the attention of pollinators. By blossoming at
the high point first the goldenrods have a better chance of being
spotted by late season pollinators, particularly butterflies.
