Butterfly Weed
- Asclepias tuberosa
This is our region's
only Milkweed with alternate leaves and a clear juice. Monarch
butterflies lay their eggs on this and other milkweeds such as
the Common Milkweed,
and they are the only food their larvae can eat. A burial site
in Ohio contained textiles made from Butterfly Weed fibers which
have been dated to 700 B.C.
