Eastern Tiger Swallowtail - Papilio glaucus

Eastern Tiger Swallowtail - Papilio glaucus
These are females of the same species. A small percentage of female Eastern Tiger Swallowtails mimic the dark coloration of the Pipevine Swallowtail which, due to its food sources, has an unpleasant taste and is generally avoided by predators. This photo was taken while they were "puddling" or obtaining salts and minerals leached out of the ground. In this case they were in an old tire track.
