Sourwood - Oxydendrum
arboreum
This species is one of
the first to change color in the autumn and is, in my opinion,
one of our most beautiful trees. This tree can assume fantastic
shapes as it competes for light when it is young, the fruit
sprays are gorgeous against
the red leaves, and the honey is delicious. This last fact
is a bit unusual since the tree is a member of the Heath family
and a close relative of Rhododendron which produces a honey which
is mildly toxic and totally unpalatable.
