One of this region's few deciduous
Rhododendrons, the long style is distinctive. There is tremendous
color variation even among plants in the same locale. Heath balds,
such as those on Roan Mountain
where this picture was taken, provide a gorgeous setting for
these. This species is deciduous with the flowers sometimes appearing
before the leaves.
