Green and gold - Chrysogonum virginianum

Green and gold - Chrysogonum virginianum

Unlike most members of the Aster family, this species blooms in the spring. The flower often appears before the foliage. As is the case with most asters, the flower head actually consists of two types of flowers. The long yellow petals are called ray flowers and are sterile. The cluster of small, round flowers in the center are the disc flowers which do all the reproductive work.
