Jack-in-the-Pulpit
- Arisaema triphyllum
This unusual flower is
a member of the Arum family. The flower consists of a 'Spathe"
which is the flap like covering and the "Spadex" which
is the spike rising up in the center. This plant will actually
change gender based upon the availability of resources. A female
plant which is stressed to a point where it may not have a good
chance to produce viable seeds
will emerge as a male the following spring. I'm not aware of
the chemistry involved, but it seems to be voodoo to me!
