Metamorphic rock is formed when
sedimentary and igneous rock are subjected to high temperature
and pressure. The resulting rock often displays curved lines
and very liquid looking folds, as seen in the picture above.
These rocks are extremely resistant to erosion, which is why
the Blue Ridge escarpment is higher than the surrounding regions.
The lack of fossils in our region is also explained by this type
of rock, any fossils which had formed here have been destroyed
as the rock melted and reformed.
