Persimmon - Diospyros
virginiana
The bark of mature Persimmons is divided into small, squarish
blocks. The fruit is quite sweet when ripe, but when green is
very bitter. An important food for foxes, skunks, deer and raccoons
among others. The dark heartwood, used extensively in the manufacture
of golf clubs, does not mature until the tree is at least 100
years old.
