Pink Lady Slipper - Cypripedium
acaule
This tiny opening in the labellum is lined with silky hairs which
prevent potential pollinators from climbing out. To escape the
flower the insect must find the slit between the two petals.
Not all succeed, but those which do must pass the style and stamen
before leaving, thus enhancing the odds the flower will be pollinated.
The rounded structure extending out of the opening is the column.
