Pink Turtlehead
- Chelone lyonii
This is an introduced
member of the Figwort family. It is very similar, in all but
color, to the native Turtlehead, C.
glabra. Bees are significant pollinators of this species
and when a large bee crawls into the blossom looking for nectar,
its movement causes the blossom to open and close. When this
happens the flower looks very much like a turtle opening its
mouth. Blooming from late summer into autumn these are a sure
sign that cooler weather is not too distant.
