Queen Anne's Lace - Daucus
carota
This an introduced member
of the Parsley family which has escaped cultivation and become
naturalized over the entire area. Queen Anne reputedly loved
the plant and, according to legend, she had pricked her finger
while working in the garden and a drop of her blood fell onto
a Queen Anne's Lace resulting in the dark floret in the center
of the inflorescence. Also called Wild Carrot it is considered
by some botanists to be the wild precursor to our commercial
carrots and features a fairly large edible root. Another common
name is Bird's
Nest and is based on the shape the plant assumes after flowering.
