Eastern Screech-Owl -
Otus asio
Our next door neighbor called my wife one afternoon in June,
2004 really excited because there were owls in the trees outside
her window. I immediately ran over and discovered this male Eastern
Screech-Owl. The only sure way to distinguish the gender, in
the field, is by the call. This guy is the red morph while his
presumed mate, which
I found in another tree is the more common gray morph. Growing
up to 8-10 inches long, and weighing only 6.34 oz, these are
our only small owl with ear tufts.
