A drink made from this member
of the Lily family was used by the Cherokee as an aid in childbirth.
They shared this knowledge with early settlers and, over time,
the plant became known as Birthwort. As time passed and our local
dialect took on its own distinctive features, locals began calling
it Bethwort.
