Wood Frog - Rana sylvatica

 Wood Frogs - Rana sylvatica
These woodland frogs are rarely seen, except during their breeding season which usually takes place in late February. The first warm rains at that time of year is the signal for these guys to leave the leaf litter where they've spent the winter and make their way to ponds and lakes. Note the distended abdomen on the larger, female frog on the bottom. As she lays her eggs the male will, externally, fertilize them. For more information about Wood Frogs, click here.
